PRESIDENT'S LETTER January 21, 2008 February President's Letter: January 21, 1994 (14 years ago) -21° in York County, PA Farm Show - snow? - cold - and soon our coldest month are past. February - What are our plans? - clean out the garage - WRITE an article for the Nut Kernel. Don't forget to collect scion wood as soon as the weather is right. March - Gee, time to think about digging those trees that were successfully grafted last June. Just read the article in the PNGA-Nutshell on how to propagate hazelnuts (filberts), do we wish to tackle this method of expanding our nut growing experiences? I know that eastern filbert blight has caused most of us to shy away from growing this good nut producing shrub or bush but we trust that the search and research continues for a blight resistant model. Back to the Farm Show exhibit - congratulations to Lester Martin for the Grand Winner this year with a cross of a pecan and hickory hican. Our market booth sales this year netted about $1250.00 in nut sales plus $480.00 in nutcracker sales. Thanks to all who helped with the judging, with the market booth, and finally let's not forget to thank Lyle Youst for his participation at the market booth. One reason why experience is such a good teacher is that pupils can't cut any classes. Have a good '08 - all 366 days.
